Throughout the course of the project, you may be forced to deal with a number of tradesmen and specialists. The most important thing is to remember that you are in charge and it is your money.
Don't be afraid to ask what someone is doing and don't be afraid to say 'no'.
If you want to make changes once a project has started then we would like you to say so. Specialist trades people will be able to offer you quality advice, but the decision is ultimately yours, and you should not feel pressured into doing something you don't want or can't afford to do.
